BRISBANE Is the state capital of Queensland and its biggest city. It is the third-largest city in Australia with a population of over 1.8 million. It is the commercial centre of the state, which has a number of medium-sized rural towns.
Brisbane is situated on the Brisbane River. It was founded in 1825, initially as a penal colony. The Governor of New South Wales, in 1823, Thomas Brisbane, instructed that a new northern penal colony be found - hence the name!
Brisbane has a humid subtropical climate, with very hot summers, and dry winters. Late spring through to autumn is characterized by monsoonal rains, winds, and sometimes flooding.
The Story Bridge is a cantilever construction bridge over the Brisbane River.
Before Sydney opened its very famous Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932, the Queensland Government commissioned the construction of the bridge as a public works programme during the Great Depression.
Although the building commenced in 1935, it was not opened until 1940. Its design was based on a similar structure in Montreal and was named after John Douglas Story, a senior, and obviously well regarded public servant. The bridge now is a major carrier of vehicles across the city.
